Houston’s hackerspace: Tx/Rx labs

March 13, 2011

A hackerspace

is a location where people with common interests, usually in computers, technology, science or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and/or collaborate. A hackerspace can be viewed as an open community labs incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops and/or studios where hackers can come together to share resources and knowledge to build and make things.

If you aren’t accustomed to hearing the word “hackerspace”, it can come off as sounding a bit pretentious, or as trying too hard to be cool. Let me tell you, they aren’t pretending. This place, Tx/Rx Labs, is seriously cool.

I joined Tx/Rx labs at the beginning of this year (2011) in order to gain access to their Mendel reprap 3d printer which I’ve been using to design and make a replacement alarm keyfob for my car. Now I’m pretty sure I’m going to try to build my own Mendel. I haven’t started buying or printing parts for it yet, but… I’m on the verge of doing so. I’ve also used one of their metal cutting saws, a drill press, and a grinder for the faux exhaust pipes on my cyclekart. But I haven’t even scratched the surface of what this place has to offer.

I was there today, and took a very short little tour with a video camera:

watch on youtube.

I mean… are you kidding me? An electron microscope? Freakin’ HUGE CNC milling machines? And there are all kinds of computer and electronics projects and equipment there as well.

But the best part is the people. There is a very high concentration of very smart and very creative people there, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced anywhere. It is an amazing place.

If you live in Houston, and this sounds like your cup of tea, you owe it to yourself to get your ass down there to 2010 Commerce Street.

During the month of March, they’re having a membership drive, and on Friday nights, you’re invited to come out and have some free hamburgers and check the place out. You can also drop by any Sunday around noon and there will generally be some people there to show you around the place.

  1. I am envious. I have a boatload of hardware that might be usable. small motors, little solenoids 12V., worm geared drives, etc. Unlikely to have exactly what anyone might need, but still stuff like a big plastic liquid filled lens weighing 40 lbs. might have some use. Sounds seriously cool to me.
