Cyclekart progress, Jan 31, 2010

I’ve started working on the hubs for the rear end. One of the things which must be done is to hack off the central bearing holder on the inside of the Honda wheel hubs. There’s not much room for a tool to get in there. I ended up using a Dremel tool to do the job. It took forever, something like 4 or 5 hours and went through probably 4 or 5 fibreglass cutting wheels.

  1. Why did you need to cut it off? I am also building a cyclekart.

  2. Because I am planning to use hubs similar to this link (if not identical… I forget the part number) and in order for them to fit into the wheel hub, you have to cut that part of the wheel off (and grind down the outer rim of the gokart hub as well)). This is the way the original cyclekart hubs were done. There are other ways to do it (fabbing your own hub that will fit over the central bearing holder, for instance.) Hope that helps.

  3. Oh yeah… when you grind down the go kart hubs, I’m told you end up grinding off so much you can’t use the original bolts/bolt holes, and have to drill new bolt holes and get new bolts (and get grade 8 steel bolts, not just any old bolts, iirc.)

  4. Where can I send you a picture of the way I am doing my hubs?

  5. Don Bledsoe: Check your email.
