Sept. 27, 2011 — Explodomatica

If you ever spent any time browsing game developer forums, one of the topics that comes up fairly frequently is sound effects, and in particular explosion sound effects. There are some programs out there, sfxr is one well known one, and it’s even been ported to javascript I think so it can run in a browser (I forget the link).

But, more options for explosion sound effects are better, so far as I’m concerned.

So, over the last few days in my spare time I started working on this little program called Explodomatica.

It’s meant to automatically generate explosion sound effects by starting off with randomly generated white noise and running it through various more or less wisely chosen filters until it comes out sounding like an explosion. The idea is there will eventually be a variety of knobs that the user can turn to produce anything from the sound of a pop gun to the sound of an atom bomb. Right now though, there really aren’t any knobs. But, it still makes wav files that sound more or less like explosions.
