Networked multi-player video game beginnings
November 1, 2012 — Here’s a little demo of the beginnings of a multi-player network game inspired by Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator that I’ve been working on after work off and on lately.
Not too much to look at, but, this has been a long, bottom-up programming exercise, and all the pieces are just now kind of starting to come together into something coherent.
It’s in the very early stages. I have been concentrating on the network aspects of it so far, and this is the first time I have something that actually displays something vaguely interesting on the screen. There’s a lobby server that can support multiple game servers, and clients can, via the lobby server, connect to the various game servers. Which would be great, if it did NAT punchthrough, but, it doesn’t. So… limited to LAN playing, which means the lobby server is probably a bit overkill, but, whatever.
